USSD applications are used in 3 areas;
1. In standard supplementary services
This is not commonly known to the users because the service are acceded by the handset without user innervation. This is normally controlled by the GSM operator by use of an internal menu. For example call forwarding.
2. Network operator internal services
These are services offered by the network operator in the process of adding value to their core service; connecting people. There are many examples of these services.
Examples:
Top-up and Balance inquiry :
Mobile telecoms use USSD to enable their subscribers to top-up their accounts, and to check their account balance.
Call-me back
Enables the prepaid subscriber to submit a USSD request to ask a contact to call them back. Subscribers can submit a USSD message even if their account balance is zero or they are roaming and there is no agreement for prepaid subscribers.
Balance Transfer
A user can recharge the accounts of others by transferring money from the user’s own account in an easy and seamless manner.
3. Third Party applications
USSD can be used for information services through mobile phones, whether smart phone or feature phones for example entertainment, sports, dating and in financial services. Very common in financial services is mobile banking. Although Mobile banking is popular with mobile apps in smart phones, USSD is also a solution to cover those without smart phones, especially in Africa.
